Les Joynes (天樂) is a multimedia artist and research scholar on the futures of art in education on the Columbia University Visiting Scholar and Scientist Program and was US Department of State Sponsored ZERO1 Arts and Technology Artist. Examining comparative art histories and art theory since 1996, Les is a graduate of Goldsmiths (MA) in London, and has curated exhibitions in the UK, France, China, Brazil and India and served on the curatorial team that created the first Taipei Biennial “Sites of Desire” exhibition at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Recipient of Fulbright awards for China, Mongolia and India, he recently serves as Senior Scholar on Art and Performance at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and Fulbright Associate Professor at Visva Bharati University in India. Joynes is founder of the performance group, FormLAB which has exhibited in museums and art centers in the US, France, Japan, Singapore, Mongolia, South Korea, and Mainland China and prepares new performances for Sri Lanka and Taiwan.
His current research examines cities as "living museums". At Renmin University, Beijing Les is professor of record for course on Modern and Contemporary Art and Site-Specific art. Les is founder of FormLAB, a nomadic laboratory that examines process, installation and performance. He is a curator and Asia Art Historian and critic. Dr. Joynes engages artistic research in multiple geographic modalities in Asia. Researching Asian philosophies, he also studies ethics and the contemplative sciences. He serves on the Editorial Board for ProjectAnywhere, a peer-reviewed journal on artistic research at the University of Melbourne and Parsons School of Art, New York and was TrAIN Research Fellow at the Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation at University of the Arts London. He recently reviews for the journal for Artistic Research (JAR). He is professor of record for BA/MA level courses including Modern and Contemporary Art History and Site Specific Performance at Renmin University in Beijing as well as Cultural Entrepreneurship at Peking University. At Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management in India I recently designed and led a workshop on the development of a new art program. He began teaching in 1999 at Musashino Art University and has lectured at University of Lincoln, University of Coventry and University of California and created the Doctoral Masterclass on Artistic Research at Chelsea College of Art at University of the Arts, London. Born in California he received his education in the US, UK and Japan. He has a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London; BA (cum laude) from Boston University; MA Fine Art from Goldsmiths, London; MA from Musashino Art University, Tokyo and M.Sc from Boston University and the Vrije Universiteit Brussels Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences. Les received his PhD from the Faculty of Art, Environment and Technology, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK and Post-Doctorate in Fine Art from the School of Communications and Arts, University of São Paulo, Brazil.
