Academic Profile Dr. Les Joynes
Les Joynes is a university professor and recipient of the Fulbright Professional and Academic Excellence Award and served as Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi. He served as an Editor for ProjectAnywhere - a peer-reviewed Journal at University of Melbourne.
He has been visiting faculty at the Institute for Cultural Industries at the School of Arts at Peking University. He is Visiting Associate Professor at Visva Bharati School of Art, and since 2013 he is professor of record for Modern and Contemporary art histories at Renmin University, Beijing At Columbia University, he is a Research Scholar specialized in Advanced Curriculum Design for the future of art education at Teachers College and recently presents at Museum 2050 Conference at the Long Museum Shanghai on Art Schools of the Future. His work has appeared on NHK Television Japan, Sculpture Magazine (US), and Art Monthly (UK).

A contemporary artist educated at St. Martins and Goldsmiths he is founder of FormLAB (image below)- a transcultural art practice series which has exhibited in the UK, France, Singapore, South Korea, France, Mongolia, China and Brazil. He began teaching in 1999 in the department of sculture at Musashino Art University, Tokyo and has been a guest professor at University of Lincoln, University of Coventry, University of the Arts London, Visva Bharati university, University of the Visual and Performing Arts Sri Lanka, Colombo National Museum, University of California and Kookmin University. Les is Professor of Record for Modern and Contemporary Art History at Renmin University in Beijing. At Columbia University he examines the futures of art education. Recipient of the Fulbright-Nehru Professional and Academic Excellence Award he served as Senior Fellow at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in New Delhi researching connections between contemporary and classical art traditions in South Asia.
Educated in the US, UK and Japan, Les examines the future of education and co-leads the Thought Leadership Institute (TOLI) Future of Education series. He has a BA (Honours) Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London; BA (cum laude) from Boston University; M.Sc from Boston University and the Vrije Universiteit Brussels Faculty of Economic and Social Science; MA Fine Art from Goldsmiths, London; MA from Musashino Art University, Tokyo. Les completed his PhD in Fine Art from the Faculty of Art, Environment and Technology, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK and Post-Doctorate in Fine Art from the School of Communications and Arts, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Les was selected by U.S. Presidentially appointed 12-member J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to be awarded the Fulbright-Nehru Professional and Academic Excellence Award. Les began curating with a dual exhibition between the Slade and St Martins in 1994 and has curated an produced exhibitions in Japan, France, Brazil, China and India and served on the curatorial team that created the inaugural Taipei Biennial. He is 2023 selectd artist for the Kaohsiung Artist Village and the Taipei Poetry Residency in Taiwan.
He serves on the Editorial Board for ProjectAnywhere, a peer-reviewed journal on artistic research at the University of Melbourne and Parsons School of Art, New York and was TrAIN Research Fellow at the Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation at University of the Arts London. He recently reviews for the journal for Artistic Research (JAR).

Led five -member team from Germany and Mongolia.
