Les Joynes
A member of the TC communities since 2015, Dr Les Joynes supports early, mid, and senior career artists and art educators in their professional growth, inclusive leadership, and adaptability within the ever-evolving education landscape. Les began researching education in 1986 and was Teachers College Research Scholar on Art & Education and currently is research scholar on Coaching in Education within TC’s Department of Organization and Leadership.
Specialized in coaching and mentoring in art education, he is professionally trained in coaching at New York University and has served as a GoldAward mentor at the University of London. He has initiated coaching pilots at University of Melbourne, Columbia University School of the Arts, California State University, and Yale.
Les has lectured in the arts since 1999 including presentations on cross-cultural arts at Columbia, Cambridge University, the University of the Arts London, Royal Academy Schools, University of Coventry, and University of Lincoln. He has served as Professor of Record Modern and Contemporary Art History at Renmin University and as Visiting Professor of Art Entrepreneurship at Peking University and was Fulbright Visiting Associate Professor of Art at Visva Bharati University in West Bengal, India.
Les is recipient of the Fulbright Professional and Academic Excellence Award and served as Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi. He served as an Editor for ProjectAnywhere - a peer-reviewed Journal at University of Melbourne in Australia. was TrAIN Research Fellow at the Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation at University of the Arts London.
Educated in art in the UK and Japan, Les explores the future of art education and models for collaborative practices. He hs curated exhibitions in London, Tokyo and New Delhi and in 1997-1998 served on the curatorial team that produced the inaugural Taipei Biennial and the Taipei Fine Art Museum in Taiwan and recently presented at Museum 2050 Conference at the Long Museum Shanghai. His work has appeared on NHK Television Japan, Sculpture Magazine (US), and Art Monthly (UK). In 2023 he was resident artist at ByWood Gallery in Kaohsiung and Resident Artist at the National Museum of Taiwanese Literature in Taipei.
